The logo of the Māori Education Trust was designed by E. Mervyn Taylor and depicts the Kotuku (White Heron) flying from darkness to light.
When Tane journeyed to the 12th heaven, to the home of the
Supreme God Io, called Matangireia, situated in the path of
the Sun, the Kotuku accompanied by messengers of Io, met him
as he reached the 11th heaven. Tane was in search of the three
baskets of knowledge for those on the Earth below. The Kotuku
and the messengers led Tane to the uppermost heaven to obtain
what he sought. That was the first time this sacred bird ever
soared in flight.
In 1996 the logo was changed to reflect the new direction
of the Māori Education Trust. The redesign was done by
Hemi Takimoana of Ngā Puhi and Rangitāne descent
and depicts a modern and stylised version of the original
White Heron.
