The E Tipu E Rea Trophy was presented in 1994 by the Te Tai Rāwhiti rohe to commemorate the centenary of the capping of Sir Apirana Ngata, the first Māori graduate at a New Zealand University (Canterbury) in 1894. Sir Apirana was a renowned scholar whose work included the revision of the Bible in the Māori language, the revision of the Williams dictionary, and the collections of Ngā Moteatea (Māori poetry/waiata).
