Former Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson, Lord Ballantrae, sponsored the first Korimako Speech Contest in 1965, with the express aim of encouraging a greater command and fluency in the use of spoken English among Māori secondary school pupils. He presented the Korimako Trophy, a carved man in Māori costume holding a taiaha, for the competition. The Korimako Trophy is now awarded to the student who gains the highest aggregate mark in both the prepared and impromptu sections of the Senior English competition. It is open to Māori secondary school students from Form 5 to Form 7.
