The Pei Te Hurinui Jones Trophy was presented in 1977 by the Māori Education Foundation. It commemorates the life and work of the late Dr Pei Te Hurinui Jones, a distinguished Waikato elder and scholar who died in 1976.

Dr Jones was a renowned orator and prolific writer. His devotion to the cultural heritage of his people and the enormous range of his knowledge in the field of Māori traditional lore is exemplified in his revision of the Ngā Moteatea series.

The University of Waikato awarded him the degree of Doctor of Literature for his contribution to literature. The Pei Te Hurinui Jones Trophy is awarded to the student who gains the highest aggregate marks in both the prepared and impromptu sections of the Senior Māori competition. The contest is open to any secondary school student from Form 5 to 7.
