In 1983, senior pupils of St Stephen's School, led by their Headmaster, the late Scottie McPherson, presented the Rāwhiti Īhaka Trophy as a tribute to a beloved teacher and mentor. It commemorates the life of the late Rāwhiti Īhaka and the reputation he earned for his skills in oratory, both in Māori and English. It also acknowledges his skills in teaching mathematics and science. It is awarded to the student who gains the highest marks in the Junior Māori section of the competition. It is open to Māori secondary school students in Forms 3 and 4.
