The Riki Ellison Trophy was presented in 1985 by the family of the late Riki Te Mairaki Taiaroa Ellison as a memorial to their poua and to acknowledge his influence in revitalising Te Reo Māori in Te Waipounamu. It was carved by David Mules. The trophy is a kauri toki wedged in a tōtara base with a pounamu inlay. The kauri and tōtara are from Hokianga and the pounamu is a piece given by Riki Ellison to the carver and his wife. It is awarded to the male student who gains the highest marks in the Pei Te Hurinui (Senior Māori) section of the contest.
