The Sir Turi Carroll Trophy, a greenstone tāonga on a base, was presented by Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa in 1980. It commemorates the late Sir Turi Carroll OBE, revered Kahungunu leader who stood firmly in both Māori and European worlds. For many years, he was Chairman of the Wairoa County Council. His last sphere of influence was as inaugural Chairman of the New Zealand Māori Council, a position he filled with distinction and one of great benefit to Māoridom. It is awarded to the student who gains the highest marks in the Junior English section of the competition. It is open to Māori secondary school students in Forms 3 and 4.
