The Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Essay Competition has been an annual event since 1948. During that time it has attracted entries from young Māori nationwide, and, together with the Board's scholarships, has provided an important avenue by which the Board, its aims and objectives can be promoted on a major scale. The competition is open to all New Zealand students of Māori decent from Forms 1 to 7, with the aim of increasing fluency in written English and Māori. The competition is administered by the Māori Education Trust.
In 1996, a decision was made by the Ngārimu VC & 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board to limit expenditure in the essay competition to $5,000 per annum. Accordingly, the competition outline was also reviewed. The basic format used in 2001 allowed students time to research their subjects rather than have them write under examination type conditions. There are six sections and each school is permitted to submit a maximum of three entries per section. Section winners were awarded prizes as follows:

Book vouchers to a value of $100, $50 and $50 respectively were awarded to the schools from which the top three place-getters in each section came.
The 2001 competition was run successfully. The first three place getters in each section received prize money (as outlined above). All entrants received certificates in recognition of the high standard of entries they submitted, which were signed by the Honorable Mr. Parekura Horomia (Minister of Māori Affairs, Associate Minister of Education) in his capacity as Chairman of the Ngārimu VC & 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Board.
