Under the terms of the Act, the general functions of the Board are to administer the fund, which provides for the granting of assistance by way of scholarship, subsidy, special grant, or bursary for the education of any Māori, or for the purpose of promoting the study and encouraging the maintenance of the Māori language and of Māori history, tradition and culture. In making any grant, the Board may, at its discretion, impose such conditions as it thinks fit. 

The Board: 

  • Awards scholarships annually to Māori students for study at Colleges of Education, Universities of Polytechnics; 

  • Conducts an annual nationwide essay competition in both Māori and English for Māori students from Forms 1 - 7; 

  • Awards a post-graduate scholarship to a Māori graduate every second year.
