It is with the sincerest gratitude that I thank the Trust for awarding me the Eric Hall McCormick Scholarship. The award has enabled me to begin the fieldwork required for my PhD. Without the Eric Hall McCormick Scholarship awarded to me it would have been very difficult to commence this part of my PhD.v
The objective of my research is to determine what a safe nursing culture is and how it can be embedded into the practice of nursing in wards and departments in New Zealand public hospitals within at least two cultural paradigms. These are that:
- Nursing organisations are cultures; and
- Nursing organisations have cultures.
Furthermore, the interdependence of nursing with other health professionals requires that consideration be given to how nursing practice can promote a culture of safety within the multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary team. This relates to the second paradigm above.
My recent academic achievements include graduating from the University of Auckland in 2006 with a Master of Management and a Master of Health Science.
I am currently working part-time for Auckland City Hospital and the University of Auckland and I enjoy surfing, going to the gym, learning Te Reo Māori and hanging out my Irāmutu.
The tips I have for study are to be focused on what you want to achieve and always set monthly goals for yourself to achieve. I guess for me I have learnt that dedication and commitment are required even when you don't feel like studying. So set a goal and don't give up until you get there!
