Tyler Bamber
Ngāti Kahu
Nicholas Irwin Hunt Writing Scholarship 2007

There is no such thing as a regular day for Tyler Bamber. Whether he's at university completing his Communications degree, at the local rugby union helping out as an events assistant or working at his part-time job as a bar manager, finding a spare moment to strum out a tune on his guitar is hard.
Tyler is in his third and final year of a Communications degree majoring in Journalism and Communication Management at Massey University in Palmerston North. "Thanks to my degree I've learnt a lot about the world of journalism, from the laws and ethics of it, to writing articles and even producing TV news stories."
Although he's not sure if he'll continue on the path to becoming a journalist, his degree opens a lot of doors into various vocations. At the moment he has been working for the Manawatu Rugby Union as an events assistant for their Air NZ cup team, the Turbo's. "Basically I help organise everything that isn't the game itself," he says, "It's been a huge learning experience into the world of event management."
Adding to this, Tyler also works part-time as a Duty Manager at a local Palmerston North pub. "It gives me a bit of spending money and means I don't have to chalk up as much on the student loan," he says, "I try to save as much as I can so my loan won't be as big of a hit when I finish."
Helping with this has been the Nicholas Irwin Hunt writing scholarship Tyler received recently from the Maori Education Trust. "One of the biggest struggles out of University these days is paying off the student loan, this just means I have a little more breathing space, it's a huge weight off."
With the end of 2007 in sight, Tyler is looking forward to finishing his degree and moving into full-time work, but not before taking a well-deserved break. "I've been looking at a few jobs, but I'll definitely be taking some time out over summer to hit the beach and relax a bit." And just maybe he can find some time to pick up his guitar again.
