Tui Lee
Ngāti Maniapoto
Rose Hellaby Bursary Scholarship 2007

My name is Tui Lee.
I am an aspiring midwife in my second year of study on the Bachelor of Midwifery program at the Waikato Institute of Technology.
My passion for midwifery and child birth education stems from my strong belief that pregnancy and child birth are natural life events which should be embraced and treasured. I believe it is a special and empowering time in our life, from experience I also know it can be a time when we feel vulnerable and uncertain. I believe that with good support and information we can make choices for ourselves that will enable us have a positive birth experience. After graduating I look forward to working with women and their families in my community as they recognize and develop their own potential while they embark on becoming caretakers of the next generation.
I am blessed to have four beautiful children to inspire me, and a wonderful husband who supports and encourages me. I am also thankful to have received financial assistance with my studies from the Maori Education Trust, which relieved the financial burden of studying, and allowed me to reduce my student loan.

Terrianne Tane
Te Roroa
Rose Hellaby Bursary Scholarship 2007

Tēnā koe. My name is Terrianne Tane and I am 23 years of age. My tribe is Te Roroa and I was born in a small place called Rawene in the Hokianga. My family are from all over but my main ties are to Hokianga, Waipoua and Waikara. I reside in a small Northland town called Dargaville.
I am currently studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary) and have nearly completed my second year, with one more year to go. So far successful in passing each paper and confident that I will continue to do so.
I finished my schooling at Dargaville High School at the end of my seventh form year with school certificate qualifications in Māori, Art, English and Mathematics. I then moved to Australia where I worked full-time as a nanny, which led me to wanting to become a teacher, and also completed my certificates in the art of airbrushing.
After two years living there I decided to move home so I could begin my journey in completing the qualifications I needed to become a teacher so that in the future I will be able to use my new skills to seek a job in the North where I can help our under-achieving and somewhat misunderstood Māori children of today.
I am currently working part-time as a merchandiser for the large food chain Watties. In doing so I am attempting to make it easier for myself and my partner financially, as I travel to the Tai Tokerau campus to complete my studies everyday. This takes up to two hours travelling per day and is quite harsh on the fuel consumption.
At the time I received the Rose Hellaby Bursary my car needed repairs and maintenance work done due to all of the travelling so without receiving this I don't know how I would have managed. I am so grateful to the people who were so kind as to consider and accept my application for 2007. I am pleased that there are people in New Zealand that care enough to help us struggling students out so we can further the educational status of our Māori people.
I play a lot of netball in my spare time and support my family who are all very sports orientated. I also like to design Māori tattoos in my spare time (not that I have much these days) and I am interested in helping children learn in any way.
The only study tip I have for all those students out there is start your assignments the day you get them. Don't wait until the night before as they will begin to pile up and you don't need the stress also because the feeling is so good when you know you've completed it and can have time for yourself and your family. Always make time for your whānau because they are backing you all the way!

Geneva Lowe
Ngāi Tahu
Rose Hellaby Bursary Scholarship

I am in my third year of study towards an LLB and BCom degree at the University of Otago. This year, up to date, has been challenging but also very rewarding.
I participated in the university Māori Mentor Programme to assist other Māori students in their first year of study and attended extra tutorials, also run by the Māori Centre.
I am currently unemployed, as my focus has been on attending lectures and preparing for exams. I feel part-time work this year would have been a distraction and defeated the purpose of my role at university.
The scholarship I received has been of immense assistance, enabling me to achieve my purpose without the need for part-time work, attend university functions and involve myself in sporting activities.
Study tips I endorse would be to prepare early for exams by refreshing lecture notes at the end of each week, or at the end of each topic covered. I also recommend a balanced lifestyle of study and extra-curricular activities. From experience, too much study can create a lack of motivation, making the workload appear burdensome and hindering the chances of success.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for being awarded this scholarship.

Mitchell Vincent
Ngāti Tūwharetoa
Rose Hellaby Bursary Scholarship 2007

My name is Mitchell Vincent and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Theatre Studies.
I have passed every paper that I have enrolled in this year and look forward to continuing into next year's studies with the same outlook.
I have dedicated my whole life to my education as I strive to find opportunities and develop new skills in theatre and performing arts.
Being a successful recipient of the Rose Hellaby Scholarship in 2007 has helped immensely as I have been able to put this grant towards my course fees and transportation to get me amongst and involved with extra curricular activities that have helped me to grow personally and professionally, and to develop these new skills in the performing arts.
I have been involved with performances such as "One Night Out Dancing", held at the University of Waikato in September, which included performing and also more knowledge behind the scenes.
I believe one of the best study tips for me has been time management. I have had an intense timetable and have had to include all of my extra curricular activities is so it could flow.
Thank you for the support you have given me to help me strive towards my goals.

Kylie Cox
Te Rarawa
Rose Hellaby Bursary Scholarship 2007

The Scholarship was extremely helpful in contributing towards my Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery course at Otago University and my living costs. I have finished my second year of the six-year course and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the summer break away from this freezing city, and will get a part-time job to try and minimise my ever-increasing student loan.
During the year I really enjoyed playing touch and netball. I also did a little bit of umpiring with the Umpire Development Squad and learnt a lot there. I received my Centre Practical Award not long ago.
I have also enjoyed being a Mentor this year with the Ka Rikarika A Tane Mentoring programme and encouraging young Maori students to accept the challenge of a career in health and sciences.
Te Oranga Wananga in Waitangi and Te Ora's Hui A Tau in Matamata were choice events which I was fortunate enough to participate in. The Medicine Kapahaka group was heaps of fun to participate in and it was very exciting performing at the cultural night. Wellington ECC week was a really good week which gave us all as medical students early community contact and very valuable training. Many thanks to the Rose Hellaby Bursary Scholarship for helping to ease the financial burden of this degree.

Ko Pohatu te maunga
Ko Ohinemataroa te awa
Ko Waikare te moana
Ko Toroa te rangatira
Ko Papakainga te marae
Ko Ngai Tuhoe te iwi

My name is Kairo McLean. I am 22 years old and a proud father of a gorgeous three-year old boy named Kairo Taonga Simon-McLean. I am currently in my second year of a four-year degree studying for a Bachelor of Physical Education at Auckland University's Faculty of Education.
In 2007 I was a proud recipient of a Rose Hellaby Bursary Scholarship. It was the first time I had ever received a scholarship, which was very handy when it came time to purchase my text books and petrol to travel back and forth from the North Shore to Epsom everyday.
I attended Westlake Boys' High School where I achieved School Certificate and 6th Form Certificate moving on to achieve bursary. In my final year of high school, I picked up the award for academic excellence and leadership in senior Māori.
I have taken part in a number of sports representing Westlake in basketball, touch, rugby (1st XV) '02 - '03), kapa haka leader ('00 - '03), prefect, peer support leader, '40-hour Famine' co-coordinator, 'Yellow Ribbon' ambassador, and senior water polo. I also captained the 2006 North Harbour Māori Colts to the regional tournament. I then moved on to playing for the Auckland Māori Seniors in 2007.
Before I began my studies, I was a full-time postie for New Zealand Post on the North Shore for three years. They are a great company to work for and whenever I have university holidays they are always willing to take me on board to get some holiday money.
I just want to give my love and aroha to the Māori Education Trust. I think they are a great asset to Aotearoa in supporting educational achievements.
Rangatahi out there, just know what you want and where you want to go and go get it. Let nothing hold you back.

Onwards and upwards.
